File Storage

Storage for Undergraduate Teaching

All Computer Science faculty, staff and students are automatically provisioned with network accessible data storage once they join the Department. These data storage areas are in addition to any

Every person is allocated the following data storage repositories:

  1. 16GB personal home directory space which is automatically mounted on in all ECS Undergraduate computing labs (drive H: in Windows labs), and also mounted on teaching linux login servers (linux.csc.uvic.ca) and linux programming labs.

Students working in ECS computing labs should always store all files they are working on in their home directory. If students working on Windows lab machines write their files to the local C:\ drive instead of their H:\ drive, the files will not be available if they log on to a different lab machine.

  2. 4GB public web hosted directory space visible on Department webhome servers (webhome.csc.uvic.ca) and can be updated via SFTP (sftp.csc.uvic.ca). This directory space can be used for hosting websites and web related project work.

  3. 100MB of personal gitlab repository space (gitlab.csc.uvic.ca), accessible using git or http protocols.

S3 Compatible Storage Buckets

S3 (Simple Storage Service) is web compatible object storage that is currently in pre-production within the Department. S3 provides access to web accessible storage through a user front-end Web GUI and a programmatic web API that is compatible with standard tools and libraries developed for AWS S3. The service is hosted from the Department’s onsite internal cloud services.

S3 Storage Buckets are available on a per request basis for instruction, research and Department admin applications by contacting itsupport.

Storage for Department Admin & Research

Home directories and shared group storage in the COSI domain can be mounted locally on workstations and laptops using CIFS mounting protocols on Windows, Apple and Linux:

COSI Network Storage for Groups and Users

COSI accounts are restricted to staff, faculty, guests and grad-students. They have access to the following data storage. This storage space is independent of storage that may be assigned to Undergraduate teaching activity.

  1. 200 GB of personal home directory space for faculty and staff which is automatically mounted on COSI linux login servers (linux.cs.uvic.ca), and can be network mounted on Department assigned laptops and workstations.

  2. 20 GB of personal home directory space for grad students and guest which is automatically mounted on COSI linux login servers (linux.cs.uvic.ca), and can be network mounted on Department assigned laptops and workstations.

  3. 4GB of publicly visible web hosted directory space visible on Department webhome servers (webhome.cs.uvic.ca) and can be updated via SFTP (sftp.cs.uvic.ca). This directory space can be used for hosting websites and web related project work.

  4. 250GB group network shares for research and Department administration. Group network shares are automatically mounted on the COSI login server linux.cs.uvic.ca:/groups. Group network shares can also be mounted on any Department assigned laptops and workstations.
